A Special Day

"Some people radiate a bright light meant to illuminate the lives of all who know them."~Mama Hen
February 10th was the day God called my Dad back to heaven. It was a very difficult time for me and although thirteen years have past, I am still working on how much I miss my Dad. As I am sure you can tell already, my Dad and I were very close. There was not a day that I did not talk to him at least once. He was a very special man who had the power to brighten anyone's day. He believed that each day should begin with a huge smile and a happy "Good morning!" When I was younger I did not understand how special his optimistic view on things was. I now know that he went through plenty of his own battles and challenges each day, however, we never knew it. He walked around as if something great just happened. He instilled in us from a very young age that we should not let a day go by without saying thank you to God for everything we have been blessed with. He was kind, would give the shirt off his back, never let success go to his head, and loved his family above all. We buried my father on Valentine's Day, which I found very appropriate. He was filled with love and deserved to go on such a special day. I miss him more than words can say. When I am deep within thought or sad from time to time, Little Chick will say, "You miss Granddaddy mommy? I miss him too." I wish that my daughter could have known him, but it is clear that I have kept his memory alive in the fact that she misses him too. On this special day which also falls upon Thanksgiving Thursday I give thanks for my family and for having been blessed with the most incredible Daddy ever!
My Dad visiting me when I lived in Mexico.
My Daddy teaching me to ride my bike.
Daddy taking me to an amusement park.
My Dad dancing while cooking hamburgers.
My Dad was always dancing and singing, trying to make us laugh.
I love my Daddy!
Helping me with my homework.
We wrote notes to each other all the time! Here is one from my Dad.

  1. Male figures are so important in our lives. I am glad that you & your father had such amazing times together and that you were able to have those memories captured by a camera. I think it is incredible that your daughter misses her grandfather, though she has never met him. That is a testament to how he still lives on, changing your and her life even now.

  4. that is the sweetest thing I have ever seen. How special and I am sure you do miss him. It is a lesson to all of us as parents that even when we are dealing with life we still need to put that smile on and love our kids well. It sounds like your daddy was an example here. Enjoy remembering these things of your dad today. So sweet, I love the pictures....

  5. Don't you just feel for the people who've never had a father to look up to. I am so sorry you lost your father, but you have such happy memories of him, as I do of my dad, and such loving times spent together. You were so blessed to have him in your life. It is wonderful that you're passing that on to Little Chick.

  6. I can only imagine what a roller coaster tomorrow will be for you. There is no doubt how close you and your dad were. From the way you talk to him to the love that comes through in pictures. You have kept his memory alive with Little Chick and I'm sure she feels like she knows him! She'll be sharing those memories with her children one day. Hang in there tomorrow! I'll be thinking of you!

  17. Just found your blog through "Along a Widowed Road". Love this post about your dad.
Sadly, my dad died when I was an infant, so I have no memory of him.
Also, when you said your dad was always singing and dancing to make you laugh, THAT reminds me of my husband - always "cutting up"!
Would love for you to visit my blog...

Your smiles are contagious and you can almost hear the laughter that you see in these pictures. I'm sorry you had to say goodbye to your dad at such an early age, Mama Hen, but at least his memory is very much alive. XOXOX.

  29. I got my newest issue of Reader's Digest in today and an article made me think of you. It is entitled "Parenting Without Your Parents" by Dawn Raffel and is about a woman named Allison Gilbert. Her first point is to keep your parents' legacies alive...I think that is exactly what you are doing. I just wanted to stop by & mention the article...you might want to check it out. <3 Katie
