Up on the Roof

"There is something so rejuvenating when climbing up high and overlooking God's abundant blessings." ~Mama Hen

Thank you to everyone who made such kind comments about my Dad yesterday. I really appreciate it. I spent the afternoon up on my roof shoveling more snow and ice. It has been a tough winter here in New England and the abundant snow falls have become rather heavy on every one's roof tops and the gutters are getting clogged up. So I did exactly what my Dad would do and I climbed up, once again, to shovel as much as I could. As I was up there the sun beat upon my face in freezing temperatures and I looked out at all the trees and beauty and I felt a sensation of calm and peace. I felt like I was following in my Dad's footsteps by "getting the job done" and not waiting for someone else to do it or for the problem to go away. I also thought about my students in fourth grade and how I used to teach them through music. I used songs with lyrics that we could digest and talk about. Up on the Roof by The Drifters was one of them. As I was shoveling I remembered the lyrics of this very happy, yet reflective song and thought how perfect it fit that particular moment and day of my Dad's anniversary.

THE DRIFTERS
"Up On The Roof"
(Gerry Goffin and Carole King)
When this old world starts getting me down
And people are just too much for me to face
I climb way up to the top of the stairs
And all my cares just drift right into space
On the roof, it's peaceful as can be
And there the world below can't bother me
Let me tell you now

When I come home feelin' tired and beat
I go up where the air is fresh and sweet (up on the roof)
I get away from the hustling crowd
And all that rat-race noise down in the street (up on the roof)
On the roof, the only place I know
Where you just have to wish to make it so
Let's go up on the roof (up on the roof)

At night the stars put on a show for free
And, darling, you can share it all with me

I keep a-tellin' you

Right smack dab in the middle of town
I've found a paradise that's trouble proof (up on the roof)
And if this world starts getting you down
There's room enough for two
Up on the roof (up on the roof)
Up on the roo-oo-oof (up on the roof)
Oh, come on, baby (up on the roof)
Oh, come on, honey (up on the roof)

Everything is all right (up on the roof)

And you had the lyrics to "Up on the Roof", one of my all time favorites. Those lyrics speak to the soul.

I'm sorry about your Dad. (I know that deep ache *sighs*) He seems like a wonderful person who was a fantastic father. You are his life's work and a wonderful tribute to him. It's not only nice that you find such comfort in his memory but that these memories guide you. Hugs!

  8. Thanks for stopping by my place, I am following back and really enjoyed your post today!! I lost my dad in 2000 and know exactly what you mean about still missing him. I think about him almost every day, as I am sure you do too. Its funny how we do something so simple in our live that reminds us of things our folks did or values they instilled in us, making us who we are today. I hope your day is blessed with smiles!! :)

  21. I love that you actually found the enjoyment in a chore that not everyone would revel in. You have me curious as to who was taking the pictures. I know you didn't have your camera on a timer. (Unless you have wings too. lol)

Take heart - I hear Spring is coming. (In about 6 weeks!) Have a great week-end!!
