Bumps in the Road

"As hard as we try not to go over the bumps,
they are still there and often can not be avoided."
~Mama Hen
"Mommy, don't go over the bumps!" This was something Little Chick said a few times on our car ride up North for our vacation. She was practicing writing her name in her car seat and didn't like when her marker slipped. The first time she said it I immediately replied with the quote above. Very profound I thought to myself immediately. So in Mama Hen style I wrote it down (after we stopped of course). It was interesting what my own response had triggered in my head as I was driving.

Life is interesting and there are so many facets that make us who we are. It is the bumps in the road that make us stronger and wiser. They are lessons we are given so that we may learn and carry on inspired and more knowledgeable. There have been some bumps in my own life that I have questioned and wished I had not taken a particular road. However, I try my best to accept what the challenge was and to stay positive through it. I know they were for a reason and I would not change things, because they have lead me to where I am today. Perhaps there are one or two roads I wish I had turned around much sooner, but as I said, I am where I am because of those bumps I had to hurdle over.
Have you ever wished you had taken a different road?

  1. I've wished I had taken many different roads. If I made a choice to go down a certain road; I remind myself that I made that choice - now I have to deal with it. Thanks for stopping by today.

  3. Well said! I think bumps or not, life is to be enjoyed!

  4. Oh such a great post...as always :) I think the "bumps" are what makes us who we are! Without them, those smooth roads would get boring after a while...right?! I know sometimes I look back at certain paths in my life and say, "what if" but then I realize my life is beautiful and filled with love from family and friends, plus the only "what if" I ever had was to get my degree in nursing rather than teaching...now I stay with my two boys at home anyway :)

  5. I think everyone has had a moment in time where they wished they had taken the road less traveled or stayed on the well-traveled one instead of veering off. I remember a movie once that emphasized that if you go back in time and change one thing, it changes everything from that point on. So, I'm like you. I'm okay with the road I'm on thus far. I've learned from the bumps I've made it over, even if a little worse for wear! I'm off to visit your friend. -EW

  6. I often think of that what-ifs, but then I look around and couldn't be happier where I am. I am trying to be more actively to stay on a good path.

  7. There are many what ifs in life. It's best that we don't waste too much time pondering over them but focus on what can we do to improve.

  8. i love your quote mama hen! it is so true..re your question, i realized i'm not the type of person who would ask "what if.." of course i do wish for things to happen differently sometimes but i have no regrets..i have made a choice so i have to stand by it...have a great day Mama Hen! =) p.s. you made me feel empowered today because of this post...

  9. Your quote is too true. I sometimes wished I wasn't on the road that I was taking, but knew that despite the bumps and road blocks, that it was the right decisions for the time. And it's made me who I am today, for better or for worse. Besides, happiness feels so much stronger when you know how it feels to be sad.

  10. Sometimes but then I remember where my bump has lead me – exactly where I want to be.

  11. The only road I wish I had "stayed on" and not veered off was the road of good health habits.

  12. Hmm...yep....a few times. But I'm with you. Those bumps (and sometimes smacks) have made me who I am. And I can't trade them - so I don't ponder over the what ifs. I've got too much to do with the right now!

Love this MH. You're the best!

  14. LIFE does help mold us, for better or worse. But it's still so hard to see people suffering. My heart still is heavy today...

  15. Well said and such a good reminder!

  16. No regrets, ever. No wishing I had chosen a different path. Any changes wished upon the choices I have made would mean the two little girls I hold most dear wouldn't be here. Sometimes the road we travel is hard, unpaved, and bumpy and sometimes the destination makes it worth it.

  25. I usually come to the exact same conclusion you did. If I changed a thing, I wouldn't be where I am today.

  26. Life is definitely interesting. I'm sure I would be a totally different person today if I had not chosen the paths that I did.

Thanks for stopping by my blog!

  30. Such a beautiful quote! Often times I have wondered why I was hitting certain bumps in the road of life, and even though some were harder then others, I try to remind myself that they are there to help teach me something. If it wasn't for the bumps in life we wouldn't learn some of the most important things about ourselves and the world around us.

  31. Don't you love it when your child says something that turns into teachable and reflective moments? As for wishing I'd taken a different road, I find these words from a song so comforting, "I don't have time to maintain these regrets when I think about the way..."

  32. Oh wow there are so many bumps I wish I had avoided, but I truly do believe that I am who I am today because of where I've been. Even because of the mistakes I've made. I like that quote (that I'm about to butcher because it's not right in front of me) but it's something about how life breaks all of us and sometimes afterwards we are stronger in the broken places. That has been totally true in my life. I have learned some things the hard way, but some of the areas where I've failed the most are the areas I am now the most strong & prepared for future bumps.
