Cherished Moments Monday

"You may not recall the day and time, but you will remember the "feeling" the day and time left you with."
~Mama Hen
I really don't remember a lot of details from my youth, but I sure do remember the sweet and safe feeling of being loved. I find it so interesting that we live so many moments, yet can only recall a few from our childhoods. Some may remember more than others, but ultimately it really is the strength we have gained and comfort we have known from being truly loved. This Cherished Moments Monday I have a picture of my big sister and I on the teeter totter with my Opi (grandfather) holding on tight to me. I feel so blessed to have had such fond memories of simply playing in the backyard. What do you remember from your childhood that leaves you with a comforted feeling?

  1. The comfort of knowing I will be okay - there was someone there to catch me when I fell, dust off the dirt and tend to the bruises. As an adult, you have to depend so much on your own intuition - but it is never to late to call mom. (Like I did at 2am when something was wrong with my tooth the other night. LOL)

  2. I remember running around with my bro and sis and our cousins, just feeling free, playing, no responsibilities other than school and the occasional chore. Loved it...I had a great childhood.

  3. I have a few memories of hiding under my parents kitchen table. I always thought that my Dad didn't know where I was - it never crossed my mind (until I was an adult and had kids of my own) that he was "playing" hide & seek with me. I would giggle and giggle as he called my name. Many comforting memories of my dad. (Hey...just discovered your whole Mama Nestwork site - you are truly amazing!!! When do YOU sleep, lady?? I just joined over there - looks like a fantastic site and can't wait to look around some more! Congrats!!!)

  4. The joyful feeling of being together and enjoying our outings to McDonald's. Back then eating out, even if it was McDonald's, was considered a treat. I would be so happy sitting there with my Happy Meal as the rest of the family enjoyed their meal.
Saturday mornings were special. Mom would cook breakfast and I would enjoy it while watching cartoons.

  5. You are right on the money about the "feeling memories". That just jogged a memory of me in the rocking chair with my youngest snuggling him, smelling him, running my fingers over his little hands...and as I rocked him I thought, I will not remember how little you are, but I will remember this moment, how much I love you at this very moment. Thanks for jogging that special memory.

  6. Hi, Mama Hen-Before I forget, here is the code for my new button (I haven't figured out how to display it visibly underneath the button itself): http://lh6.ggpht.com/_zOTMPlMt2gI/TGrQRxs8e4I/AAAAAAAAAjc/Pwiin9mJ7Jg/eastlyn%202.png
Cassiopeia is truly a sweetheart for making that for me to match my blog.
Now, on to memories...I think what I loved most was the freedom to be a kid. Our neighborhood was full of kids and there was a playground just down the hill from our houses so someone's parents could see us at all times. Then, there was a swimming pool within walking distance, too. We rode our bikes down "Hansen's hill" and were rarely cooped up indoors. The ice cream truck made his rounds; and, occasionally, we got to get something from him. We knew to be in by the time the street lights came on. I regret that my own kids don't have that freedom. The good thing about Little Chick's childhood is that you've done an awesome job of documenting all of the fun she is having every day. Seeing the pictures will help her remember her cherished moments even when she is all grown up! -Eastlyn

  8. oh that feeling of love and safety...nothing like it :) I wish we could remember all of our childhood-the time with my grandparents that I miss the MOST...I want to remember more! I know that I have their dishes they used for me at their house and I use them with my boys and think of them EVERYDAY and the memories we made at the kitchen table...talking, laughing and eating my grandma's homemade italian food :)

  9. I remember looking forward to school holidays cos that's when I'll follow my mum back to her hometown and I get to play with my cousins, cycling around the village, catching tadpoles and small fishes from the small stream, catching grasshoppers, and all sorts of things!

    Thanks for this great topic!

  12. I remember food. My mother coming home from work beat tired, yet making a fabulous meal, rarely ever from the box. Being an ocean away from my family, I often cook meals my parents did. Make me feel all comfy and like my parents and brothers are sitting at the table with me.

  13. You are SO RIGHT. We do remember the 'feeling' of that date and time. Lots of good feelings I remember from growing up on a dairy farm and piling into the car to head to the lake on a hot summer evening after the chores were done!

  15. Such a beautiful memory....I remember being introduced to books and the world of reading. Often times, I would be able to escape to any place that my books would take me...even if the present wasn't so lovely.

    I love the pic also.

  16. From Mother hen to Mama hen, great photo, I can remember my grandparents so vividly, and the smell of their home is one to cherish, always smelled like home made bread, I think my grandma baked daily, they were precious and even being adopted I felt really loved. Hugs and blessings, Barbara

  17. Ah, that's a sweet memory, Mama Hen. My mom used to take me and my brother for swimming class and afterwards she'll take us to McDonald's for their soft serve ice cream - that brings back memories of being cared for!

  18. I remember sitting in the back seat while Dad drove us (younger sister) and I home from ballet class. He always had The Doors or The Beatles playing and would be drumming the steering wheel while singing at the top of his lungs. So many great memories with my parents.

  22. I remember my mom cleaning the house and the windows open and the music on (John Lennon, John Denver). I remember summer evenings in and out of the pool and bbq and board games on the porch with my mom in her big mumu dress.

  23. Hi "Mama Hen"- I first want to say Congrats on winning the blog of the week at "Blog Mommas", where I found your blog. My blog is also listed in their directory so maybe I'll win one of these days too :)
From my childhood, I remember bike rides with my parents and siblings around a huge lake/park that is in my hometown. Then after bike riding we would take paddle boats on the lake. These are happy memories and ones that I cherish.

  26. What a darling picture of you and your sister! You are so little riding that swing!!! I remember coming to Florida to visit my grandfather and picking oranges from his Grove and going in the house and making fresh squeezed orange juice. It was something we did together and was so special. When he passed, I got his juicer and still use it to this day.
