Watching the Sun Rise

"Be mindful of how you approach time.
Watching the clock is not the same as watching the sun rise."

I don't know about you, but this quote really strikes a chord within me! Tonight when I was putting Little Chick to bed she tossed and turned and talked and then the lawn guys came right when she was finally falling asleep (not sure why they were here at 7:00 PM). She sat right up and asked me about why they were here at night. I told her that I wished I knew that myself. This added another hour and fifteen minutes onto our bedtime routine. Tonight was one of those nights I was really pooped out and just wanted to get a little "me" time. As I heard the humming of the lawn mowers I kept looking at the clock thinking oh brother!

Right when Little Chick finally fell asleep I did not get that sense of now I have "me" time. I kind of wanted to turn back the clock and maybe read another book to her and wait until the mowing finally stopped. I tried not to show it, but I was aggravated with the lawn guys and I laid down next to her pretending I was asleep. I hoped that this would help her to go to sleep, but she just kept tossing and turning. I can't turn back the clock, but I can move forward and reflect in times like these. As much as the dishes, laundry and computer time was on my mind, I should have just taken the moment to turn it into something a little more special. So next Friday if they happen to show up at bedtime again, I will simply read a couple of more books and get more giggles out of it!

Similar thoughts come to my mind too when I try putting Rida to sleep and she takes forever! and when she does I wish I had utilize this time playing dolls with her or anything that would make her smile and laugh and I would just have to rock her once before she zzzzzz! :)I keep this mind everytime!

  10. I've had those moments, too - especially regretting after the fact not making the most of it. But it does help remind us to take advantage of those moments in the future, doesn't it? And I'm still searching for that 'pause' button... ;)

Thanks for stopping by my blog and following me - I'm following you, too! :)

  17. Oh gosh! I was just thinking this with my Ayva! I wrote down a note to myself to stay present, stay in the moment. It makes me think that I need to streamline other things in my life so that I can have a clear enough head to appreciate our time together.

P.S. This pic is TOOO adorable!

  21. It seems that my desire to turn the clock back always happens in the evening when it's quiet enough to reflect (besides lawn mowers buzzing outside!) I totally understand how you feel, and you have a great attitude about giving it a second try next time! Such an inspiration!

  22. I totally have those moments with my kids, but I love the quote of just "turning back the clock" and turning those frustrated moments into "special moments". You really got me thinking Mama Hen, mahalo for that.

    Happy Sunday!

  24. I find myself having these moments too. I just think about the day that my son will be too old for all of this and that I need to appreciate while I can. Ahh can't he just stay little forever lol

  25. I felt for you here on the need for "me time". But so good to remember to try and do best with whatever happens. So often I feel "robbed" when my (granted, younger than yours) baby doesn't nap when I think she is suppose to, when, really I could think this is instead time I get to spend with her. I need to remember scheduling now becomes a bit more flexible with kids and I need to "roll with it" a bit more than I am naturally inclined to ;)

I'll get there. Love your blog, and the quotes and reminders to slow down and do just that.

  26. What a great lesson in perspective. It won't be long until she is heading to bed on her own at night and won't even want a story read to her. Every moment is a treasure!

  27. Precious. I know what you mean. I often wish for more "me" time, but just love the time I spend with my 13 month old; and sometimes when I finally have "me" time, I miss cuddling with her (but can't wake her up, of course)!

  28. I can totally relate to this post. I find myself trying to speed through a moment with my daughter when I am tired or desiring "me" time. We mothers need our time so much, but sometimes just being a mommy and spending that extra few minutes with our children can be so much more rewarding. Thank you for sharing your story, it reminded me the importance of those little moments!
