With Loving Hands

"With loving hands we pass on the memory of our spirit." ~Mama Hen

This scarf carries a very special memory for me and now Little Chick. My Omi (grandmother) passed it on to me when I was in my young twenties. My daughter wears it every time we go sledding. There are two constants when we have our fun sledding days: Omi's scarf and hot chocolate. Each time we get ready to go out Little Chick always says, "Don't forget your Omi's scarf." I get a warm feeling when she says it and it makes me feel so good to know that it was passed on from one pair of loving hands down to another. Perhaps one day my daughter will pass it down to her own daughter with such fond memories. The necklace in the pictures below is also a very special gift from my Omi. She wore it as long as I can remember. It has two gold acorns on it, which represents my sister and I. (I guess in a way you can say we are two nuts! Ha!) When my grandmother passed this on to me I cried and cried. It was one thing she never took off. Then one day she took it off from her neck and placed it around mine with her warm loving hands. The pictures are from that moment and as you can see my eyes are all welled up. I was very close to my grandmother just as Little Chick is close to my mom. These are such special cherished moments.

  5. This is a wonderful story. I love that Little Chick understands the real value of your Omi's scarf, and loves it as much as you do. I was close with my grandmother too. Every time I wear her apron to cook, I feel a little closer to her again.

  13. This is very sweet! This is one reason I chose to stay in Germany longer, so my son will have precious memories of his oma und opa. He's also got to meet his omi and opis. My younger two will have the luxury of livin most their lives statesside close to their grandparents while growing up, so I wanted my son to be able to have as many cherished memories of his grandparents as he can. I am sure they are making the most of their time with him and will pass on sacred heirlooms for him to remember them. Though, they can visit him stateside as well. It won't be so often. This was very touching. Your little chick is so thoughtful as usual! I hope you guys had a great New Year! Much love from the Vaterland :)

  22. I love the picture of you with your Grandma. Things passed down are very special! My mom gave me a mirror that has an antique painting on it of girls dancing ballet which my mom did as a teenager. It's very sentimental to me and I will most def. want to pass it along. And how precious that at such a young age your daughter is already understanding the treasure of her scarf! Happy New Year friend!

  23. Oh, Mama Hen ... you are I are really two similar souls. My Grandma and I were very close, and I have a couple pins that she would often wear. I also have a few pairs of slippers she crocheted, and some afhgans. Each time I cuddle up with one of her afghans, I feel like her arms are around me and close. This post brought tears to my eyes, dear friend. Thank you for sharing this amazing moment with us.
