Savoring the Moments

"Savoring the moments takes a constant reminder." ~Mama Hen

Living each moment is an ongoing thought in my mind and reoccurring topic on Mama's Little Chick. Even with all the conscientious thoughts regarding this, I still find the days flying by and the ongoing responsibilities and stresses taking away from truly "feeling" all the moments. Having turned forty recently has really been a huge dose of reality for me. I still think like I'm in my twenties, but I sure feel like I am forty. I think that my share of challenges the past ten years have added to this and just the fact that time seems to be slipping by in chunks, really gets me wondering about how I am living my life and how I can try to slow it down. I do not necessarily agree with the incredible pace that is expected of us from such an early age. I see it with Little Chick and the expectations in preschool and getting ready for kindergarten. I believe that children should be children and enjoy playing and running around during this short fleeting point in their lives. The pressures start young and the decades zip by within a blink of an eye. So how do we hold on to the moments? How do we alleviate the pressures and focus on what is truly important? This is my quest so I can assure that my daughter lives a happy fulfilled life. What do you do to savor the moments?

  1. Great minds think alike! I just posted a few hours ago about savoring the moments with our children. I agree about letting kids be kids...everything seems so rushed, right?! I know that I try my hardest to hold each moment with my husband and children SO close to my heart!

  2. Yes, time flies by waaay too fast. I only wish I knew the formula for being more aware of it all.

    Happy New Year!

  3. Happy new year, Mama Hen. I love your focus on the moments... I think it's the key to gratitude which is the key to happiness.

I need constantly to remind myself to slow down and observe. x

  4. If you find a way to slow time down, let me know. All I know is that my babies are growing up way too fast! I love that picture of you guys! ox

  6. I wish I had an answer - I can remember bringing Matthew home from the hospital and now here we are almost 2.5 years later. I blinked and it happened!

I'm going to try to savor today - snow day for us!

  7. That is a beautiful photo of you two. I love the angle from which it was taken. I think one of the things parents can do today to slow down time and let their children be children...is to remove the TV. There's such an artificial 'reality' there that puts unbelievable pressure on children and parents to conform to an arbitrary and unhealthy social standard with its accompanying materialism and self-centeredness.

  8. They grow up so fast, I try my best to savor each moment with my little girl. So many things are happening, I just take as many photos as I can so I can look back to the precious moments in the future and re-live them in my mind.

  9. There seems to be a lot of academic expectation placed on children in school, and not so much equipping them to learn through discovery. One thing I want to do is how to let my kids discover things based on their own desire to learn, and how to guide them to think about how it ties into what they're learning in school. Does that make sense? I guess what I'm trying to do is figure out if I can "multi-task" their education while savoring some moments at home at the same time. I hope it's possible!

  10. I really try to memorize each little moment where she does something cute or funny, or the first time she does something. I take a million pictures, and I also put the camera away to fully immerse myself in my surroundings.
Kids are forced to grow up so fast nowadays. There doesn't seem to be any room for playing anymore - we have kids so busy with sports, classes and homework that there's hardly any time. I'll do my best to limit Georgia's activities to give her enough time to have fun and enjoy her childhood. Have a great night my friend! Hope your Friday was fabulous!

  11. I posted something similar not that long ago. My Baby C is 8 months old and time is flying by. I treasure the time i have with him being small and getting to feed him a bottle still and cradle him in my arms.

  12. That is a lovely photo of the two of you!

You may not act forty and certainly do not look 40!! I love your slow down posts, because I tell my husband that we should savor every moment. When we think the kids should something or they did something they're not supposed to, we think about their age a bit and remember they're acting their age! So I savor moments with photos, prioritizing things that I want to do quickly (like say dinner) so I can spend more time doing something else like reading To playing with my lil ones. It's a great way to treasure the memories. Because when you do things quick, or at least when I do, I don't remember a thing!

  13. Keeping a blog for me has been my way of trying to savor the moments. Otherwise, I find that I forget what I did only two days ago. You're right...at this age times does seem to slip away in chunks. I really do wish we could freeze some moments in time and come back to them... I LOVE the picture of you and Little Chick--so pure!
