Time

"Time is the coin of your life. It is the only coin you have, and only you can determine how it will be spent. Be careful lest you let other people spend it for you."
~Carl Sandburg
Time. It is something I have written about quite often since I have started blogging. Finding balance in the time we have, cherishing moments, and simply holding on to the “now” as much as we can. But in reality I think as much as I write about it I find myself a bit frightened by the fact that it really does seem to fly by way too quickly. I see it in how fast Little Chick is growing, in my Dad’s passing, my mom’s aging and when I look in the mirror. No, this post is not meant to be about gloom and doom, however the contrary. I have been really thinking about what it is that I need in my life to truly capture the moments and hold on and savor them long enough to say that I “truly lived in the moment”!
My dear friend George passed away last year at 94 years of age. I had gotten to know him ten years prior and I adored our conversations about his life. He was a young man trapped in an elderly man's body! He lived a full life! He had known true love (his wife passed away shortly before I met him), had a beautiful home which he shared with his friends through many parties and he had traveled quite a bit with his beloved wife. I often looked at his eyes and wondered what it was like to have such a full spirit, yet to have a body that was giving out.
When I look at my own life and how much I cherish being a mommy I often wish I could just slow it down a bit! Time really does have a way of passing quickly and I don't want to miss a second of it!

My mom, George and I.

Mom and Dad not too long ago!

  1. Such a great post! Very similar to the premise of the novel I'm writing. Although I cringe when someone tells me to enjoy the moments, because one day I'll want them back, it's only because I fear regret! You are doing a wonderful job at enjoying the moments, Mama Hen!

  2. This is a great post... it is also something I struggle with every day... it is frightening how fast time flies. It is my goal to try to make the moments more meaningful... I just hope I reach that goal!

  3. great post. Time goes by far too quickly. I hope I can cherish each and every moment before I let them pass me by...I know we're all guilty of getting "busy", but I need to do a better job of making time to share moments with loved ones!

  6. What a great quote you found - and so right. Sometimes, though, it's not others spending our time for us, it's us doing it and not paying attention!!!

  8. you are so right mama hen! i'm also afraid my kids will not like to spend time with us anymore once they've become teenagers..ao i make it a point that they enjoy the moment they are at home so that no matter where they go and who they are with (in the very very near future),they will always feel that home is the place to be..btw, your mom's like a princess in the last photo. =)

  10. My condolences about your friend and your dad. Time does disappear fast. I think I often spend too much time worrying about the future rather just enjoying what I have.

  11. So true - there are days when I can't remember my son as a newborn and I realize how quickly all that time has passed and how much I wish it would slow down!!

  13. It is good you realize that about 'time' now, before it is too late. Too often, people don't.

  14. I agree with everything you said and the comments too! I've been thinking a lot about our 95 and 97 yr-old friends (last two posts about them). I get so busy with kids and dogs and life, that I don't make as much time for them as I should. It's not that they need me. They have a full-time caregiver, a nurse that stops by, kids, grandkids and great-grandkids that love them, and are lucky enough to still be in their own home. But they don't have too many years left. I need to make it a priority to get over there! Thanks for the reminder.

  18. Mama Hen-ditto to everything said above. The older we get the faster time flies, no doubt. You may rest assured that even in the short 4 years of Little Chick's life you have probably created more memories and cherished more moments than some people experience in their entire lives. And, you have it all documented in your blogs and photos to boot! I think you have a pretty good handle on the "take time to smell the roses" approach to life, even if it doesn't always feel like it. The fact that you're aware that time really does fly and you spend your time with Little Chick very wisely (in my humble opinion) is a testament. Keep doing what you're doing...EW

I think it's so life-giving to have friends of different ages. And that picture of your parents is amazing! You really look a lot like your mom in that photo! {beautiful}
